This song is one of my 5-star favorites. I love the evocative sentiment of this music so much that I’ve requested that it be played at the scattering of my ashes.
A fitting send-off, I thought, for a thirty-five-plus-years-sober alcoholic like meself.
This verse in particular calls to me, as it speaks of the essence of a life well lived: love and friendship.
Of all the comrades that e’er I had,
They’re sorry for my going away.
And all my sweethearts that e’er I had,
They’d wish me one more day to stay.
But since it fell unto my lot,
That I should rise and you should not,
I gently rise and softly call,
Good night and joy be to you all.
